Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd. has announced “XR Measure,” an XR measurement and management application aimed at improving the efficiency of construction management for mountain tunnel projects. It was developed in cooperation with Nexteras Inc.

This app allows users to measure distances simply by wearing an Apple Vision Pro and specifying the start and end points of the object. Based on pre-measured reference points, it overlays a CIM model (a 3D model integrating construction information) onto the real world. Users can proceed with their work while checking measurement information on the design cross-section in real time, and measurement tasks that previously required two people can now be completed by one person.

This eliminates the need for aerial work platforms and surveying equipment, and also eliminates the need for temporary road closures for construction vehicles during measurements. The measurement results are automatically reflected in CAD drawings and automatically output as DXF format reports. Because the entire process from measurement to report creation can be completed independently, significant labor savings are expected.
Measurement flow in “XR Measure”
In the ongoing construction of the Tawarayama-Toyoda Road No. 2 Tunnel in Yamaguchi Prefecture, a field demonstration was conducted using wall-surface water-conducting sheets. The difference from the measurement values obtained using conventional steel tape was within ±10 mm, confirming sufficient accuracy for practical use.
“XR Measure” was developed as part of the “SMC-TN Management” suite of tunnel construction management technologies deployed by Mitsui Sumitomo Construction. SMC-TN Management consists of multiple systems aimed at improving the productivity of on-site management, including remote inspection systems and automated measurement of reinforced concrete construction. In the future, the company plans to centralize measurement data by strengthening integration with CIM models, thereby improving the productivity and safety of the entire construction site.
