Rokid Smart AI Glasses were initially sold on Makuake. According to Rokid, the total amount raised through crowdfunding reached 636,736,060 yen, with 7,413 supporters, making it the highest crowdfunding amount in Makuake’s history.

Rokid’s concept: “AI will emerge from smartphones into our field of vision.”

At the beginning of the presentation, Zoro Shao, Vice President of International Business at Rokid, introduced the company as a global company specializing in AI and AR.

Founded in 2014, Rokid began developing smart glasses from its early stages. With over 12 years of research and development, and full-stack technical capabilities encompassing hardware, OS, interaction, and AI services, the company has achieved the number one sales position globally in the wearable AR glasses market and boasts a growth rate exceeding 600%.

Shao: “We have a 12-year history and are building the world’s largest open ecosystem. Currently, we have over 30,000 engineers and more than 5,000 companies participating.”

Shao: “This Makuake project has been a huge help to us, thanks to the support of everyone who believed in us even before they had actually experienced the product. We will continue to invest at least 1 billion yen in the Japanese market to focus on marketing, research and development, and building a developer ecosystem.”
As part of its initiatives for the Japanese market, Rokid also announced the “Japan Rokid Tour,” an experiential event that will visit five cities, starting in Tokyo, followed by Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. The aim is to provide a space where people can experience how the product can be useful in various situations such as travel, work, communication, and daily life. In addition, a UGC (User-Generated Content) challenge will be held where users can post their experiences using Rokid smart AI glasses from their own perspective. The company plans to promote the device as one that expands user interest by sharing how it is used.

The underlying AI-native OS is “YodaOS”.

The foundation supporting this concept is “YodaOS,” an AI-native OS for smart glasses.
Smartphone operating systems are designed with the assumption that users will operate them by tapping the screen. AI glasses, on the other hand, are typically operated via voice commands or smartphone apps, but a combination of taps, eye movements, and body movements is preferable. Since they may be used while walking, talking, or working, it is important to simplify the operation flow and design them so as not to interfere with real-world activities.

They say that a multimodal user experience is also necessary, where input for each situation is connected to AI agents or external services, such as translating when reading foreign language signs, getting directions and travel routes while traveling, or referring to procedures while working.
YodaOS is an operating system designed to bridge these gaps. It will function as a layer connecting large-scale language models, memory systems, holographic displays, applications, external services, and real-world information.

Zhao Weiqi, Head of Open Global Ecosystem at Rokid, said the following:
Zhao: “We believe that in the next 10 years, we will move towards developing AI applications. Until now, AI has existed as an application, support, or cloud service. However, AI should become a design-sensitive service. AI needs to be deeply integrated into the hardware, OS, interaction, and user experience. Users will not need to use various applications. It will provide the support they need, when they need it. This is our vision of an AI OS.”

“Store Agent” to expand functionality

The concept for an agent store was also announced. Rokid aims to create an ecosystem where developers and partners can provide various AI agents, rather than solely providing the functionality for Rokid smart AI glasses themselves. The overseas version of the AI agent development platform has now been released, and the agent store is scheduled to open in July.
Examples include AI agents that verbalize animals’ emotions based on their sounds and facial expressions, and AI agents that report on the status of sports matches. Gaming features are also being considered.

Developing new use cases enhances the appeal of AI glasses.

The Rokid Agent Store will serve as a platform to expand the use cases of smart AI glasses. What other apps will be featured? Louis Lee, the developer of Rokid and founder of Arvione AI, presented an idea for a sales support AI agent that can help with business conversations, starting from exchanging business cards.

Scanning a business card with a smartphone camera and obtaining information to use in a conversation takes time. Rokid Smart AI Glasses utilize its camera and AI capabilities to analyze the text on the business card, allowing the AI to research company and individual information. This information, including company overview, business details, recent news, and potential conversation starters, is displayed on the HUD (Head-Up Display). This provides supplementary information to help you understand the other person while maintaining the flow of the conversation.

How to communicate experiential value in general retail settings

Rokid smart AI glasses are a product whose value is difficult to convey through spec sheets alone. While features such as translation, photography, navigation, and AI search can be explained, how naturally they can be used in everyday life and work can only be understood by actually trying them out.
For general sales, it’s not just about highlighting the AI’s capabilities. It’s also crucial to let people experience the feel of wearing the glasses, the readability of the display, and whether they interfere with communication with those around them, at stores and events. Creating these points of contact will help many people understand AI glasses, and the opposite is also possible.
Rokid Smart AI Glasses, which garnered significant support on Makuake, are finally entering the general sales phase. The next challenge will be to leverage the expectations generated during the pre-sale to make people feel, through mass retailers and experiential eventhttps://jp.rokid.com/pages/rokid-glassess, that “this could be useful for me too.”
