On July 6th, XREAL officially launched its new sub-brand “xbx” in Japan and released its first product, the “XREAL xbx 01+” glasses. The price is 43,980 yen (including tax).
The product concept is “Enjoy playing on a large screen at your leisure.” It features a lightweight 62g body, a 50-degree diagonal viewing angle (equivalent to a 147-inch screen at 4 meters), a high brightness of 1600 nits, HDR support, AI-powered HDR conversion, and a customizable front frame.
Bringing XREAL’s technology to a more accessible brand.

“The xbx 01+ is the first display glasses for the younger generation.”
Taka, Manager Product and Manager Ecosystem at XREAL Japan, who is in charge of products and the ecosystem, took the stage at the press conference and introduced XREAL’s track record in the display glasses market and its high rate of in-house development before explaining the positioning of the new brand xbx.
While XREAL itself is a brand that represents the latest technology in consumer display glasses, xbx is positioned as “the first ticket to embrace the future,” and aims to reach people who have never used display glasses before, as well as users who are not gadget enthusiasts.

AR glasses are devices that enable spatial computing and advanced interfaces, including 3DoF/6DoF sensors and hand tracking functions. However, the xbx 01+ emphasizes a simpler, more portable large screen. It connects to smartphones, PCs, and game consoles, covering use cases such as watching movies and anime, or using it as a monitor for games or work. In a sense, it is pure display glasses.
Lightweight body weighing 62g. Removing the front frame reduces the weight to 56g.

One of the most notable features of the xbx 01+ is its lightness. Weighing just 62g, it was presented at the launch event as being roughly the same weight as a tennis ball or AirPods Pro.

The main body has also been made thinner, and the thickness of the top and sides of the frame, which was often noticeable on conventional display glasses, has been reduced. A translucent part is used on the top of the frame, adopting the recent see-through trend. Rather than just being a display, it is also designed to look like a fashionable item to be worn.

When I actually tried them on, I realized they were the lightest XREAL glasses ever. In fact, I think they might be the lightest among all full-color, large-screen birdbath style display glasses from other manufacturers. It’s not just that the whole thing is lightweight; the thin front means the weight is closer to your body, and the balance with the weight of the temples, arms, and USB cable is excellent, resulting in dimensions that make you hardly feel the weight.

The nose pads have a wide surface area that contacts the nose, and their structure allows for easy fine-tuning. This means they are less likely to slip, even for users with smaller faces.
I have a low nose bridge, which makes it difficult to find smart glasses that fit perfectly, but the xbx 01+ is incredibly comfortable. The weight on my nose is minimal, and I’m confident that with prescription lenses, I could use them as glasses or sunglasses from morning till night.

The temples are also designed to prevent them from hitting the pillow when you lie down. Display glasses are often used as devices for watching videos, and you’d want to use them while lying on the sofa or in bed. The xbx 01+ incorporates a design that takes such postures into consideration.
Its lightness, thinness, and the shape of the nose pads that support the temples and front of the frame—these four factors are what make the xbx 01+ among the most comfortable display glasses available.
1600 nits, HDR, 10-bit display. Large screen for easy viewing outdoors.

In terms of display performance, the high brightness of 1600 nits is a key feature. You can enjoy the rich colors of images even outdoors, and because the brightness can be adjusted in 14 steps, you can get the appropriate dynamic range even when watching movies in bed late at night.
It boasts a 145% sRGB color gamut and a color accuracy of ΔE < 2. It supports HDR10, displaying approximately 1.07 billion colors. By suppressing overexposure and clearly displaying both bright and dark areas, it enhances the viewing experience of HDR content. It also features an AI-powered function to convert SDR to HDR, making it easier to view common videos from services like Netflix and YouTube.

When I tried them at the press conference, the color reproduction was outstanding. This is the richest tone in XREAL history. The quality is satisfying for movies, anime, and games. The field of view is a standard 50 degrees for modern display glasses. Not only the center but also the periphery is clear and sharp, and there is no color bleeding. There is no black crushing or white blown-out, and text is easy to read. Don’t underestimate them just because they are an inexpensive model.
Due to its 0DoF specification, the virtual screen’s spatial orientation cannot be fixed. Furthermore, it lacks a widescreen mode that displays 32:9 (3840 x 1080 pixels) virtual windows, nor does it support the use of multiple virtual windows side-by-side. This is a major difference from the XREAL One series and others. This also reflects the price difference and clearly establishes xbx’s position as a brand offering “reasonably priced models for those who don’t need the features of higher-end models.”
By the way, when using display glasses, small vibrations from chewing food or talking can sometimes cause the screen in your field of vision to appear to shake. The xbx 01+ is equipped with an image stabilization function to suppress this shaking.
At the presentation, they explained that even when watching a video while lying down and eating potato chips, the vibrations transmitted through the jaw are less noticeable. This feature that stabilizes the image within the field of view is achieved through AI-based posture prediction, 120Hz rendering, and motion tracking at 1000 times per second. However, to fully utilize the image stabilization, the connected host device needs to support 120Hz output.
You can make your own front frame with a 3D printer.

One particularly unique feature of the xbx 01+ is its customizable front frame. The front frame is removable, and optional frames are available.

XREAL also officially provides its 3D data in OBJ format. Users can then use a 3D printer to create their own custom frames.

Changing the shape and color can drastically alter the overall impression of the glasses. However, XREAL seems to be hoping for a culture of user-generated content (UGC) to create custom frames, rather than simply increasing the color variations.

If you’re not planning to use them as sunglasses, you can also create frames that don’t use glass or acrylic lenses. Even with a single-color 3D printer, you can paint them with markers or customize them with stickers to express your individuality.
It’s clear that XREAL positions the xbx 01+ not just as a low-cost display glasses, but as a product that’s also fun to look at. Since display glasses are devices worn on the face, design is important (incidentally, the AI glasses market is currently polarizing into Ray-Ban style designs and Gentle Monster style designs). The customizable front frame structure is a clear message aimed at the young people and fashion-conscious users that xbx is targeting.
This is the perfect entry-level model for display glasses.

The xbx 01+ is not a product that prominently features full-fledged spatial computing. Rather, it is an entry-level display glasses device aimed at people who want to easily view the screens of their smartphones, PCs, and game consoles on a larger screen.

To reiterate, the price of the xbx 01+ is 43,980 yen (tax included). Considering the current exchange rate, this is a very strategic price. Recommended for those looking to choose their first pair of display glasses, or for those who want lightweight display glasses after understanding the performance of 3DoF/6DoF AR glasses.
