XR in Japan 2026.06.01

The BCI device “PiEEG XR,” which attaches to a VR headset and is controlled by brainwaves, has launched a crowdfunding campaign.

The “PiEEG XR,” a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) device that attaches to a VR headset to read brainwaves, is preparing to launch a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Development is being handled by PiEEG, based in Edinburgh, UK.

Please note that we have not been able to confirm any information regarding sales in Japan or acquisition of technical compliance certification at this time.

PiEEG XR is used by attaching a dedicated shield to a VR headset. It reads the user’s neural signals and uses them to control the virtual space. Its two main functions are “Emotional Sync” and “Neural Interaction.” Emotional Sync reflects emotions such as joy and excitement in the avatar’s facial expressions and lighting. Neural Interaction manipulates the virtual environment according to the user’s level of concentration.

It also features a function called the “Focus-to-Action API.” In the demo environment, it is demonstrated that by concentrating on and gazing at a digital object, the object can be melted or deformed according to the intensity of brainwaves.

PiEEG XR is planned to be released as open source. The repository is publicly available on GitHub, providing raw data and tools for developers and researchers. It is envisioned to be used in the development of thought-controlled games and research on emotional responses in VR.

The hardware specifications include a low-noise design, a measurement speed of 250 samples per second, data transfer via BLE5, and 24-bit resolution. The GitHub repository has over 600 stars, and the Discord community has over 1,000 members.
