Tokyu will open a Common Ground experience facility in Shibuya from November 28, 2025. The facility will be located at “SOIL,” a facility on the 14th floor of the Shibuya 1-Chome Block Building, and is scheduled to run until March 31, 2026. This initiative will be carried out in cooperation with COMMONGROUND Co., Ltd. as a new attempt using AR.
The facility will utilize spatial overlay technology promoted by Professor Keisuke Toyoda of the University of Tokyo. AR will display avatars of people in remote locations, allowing for real-time interaction using gestures. 3D sound will allow conversations to feel as if you are in the same place as the other person. The aim is to overcome the constraints of distance and solve social issues by proposing new ways of working and living.
The demonstration experiment will verify the convenience of remote communication and will also consider business models, such as introducing the system to facilities. From January 2026, trial sessions for companies and government agencies are scheduled to be held one after another. This project began as a result of participation in a Cabinet Office research project. After relocating and renovating, the venue, SOIL, will become a base for supporting social implementation with a variety of companies.
COMMONGROUND Inc., a joint venture, was established in January 2025. The company aims to build Common Ground, a common platform that will enable people and robots to universally acquire environmental information. Currently, mixed reality (MR) headsets are used, but in the future, smart glasses are also envisioned. The company is also considering a service that acquires human behavior as data and links it with a large-scale language model. Through the development of a large behavior model (LBM) that describes human behavior, the company aims to realize flexible communication between robots and people.
