Japan XR Center Inc. announced on February 17 the development of an “Aircraft Entry Door Opening and Closing Training” system for Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL). This system combines the SenseGlove Nova 2 haptic glove, which reproduces the sense of touch, with the Meta Quest 3 VR headset, to provide a training experience that is close to the actual operation.
Traditionally, specialized training equipment known as “cavity equipment” has been used for aircraft door opening and closing training. However, there are limitations on the number of pieces of equipment and the space available to install them, making it difficult to coordinate training schedules and secure space for the many staff members required. Additionally, cavity equipment sometimes does not adequately reproduce the feel of the actual operation, which places certain limitations on the training environment.
To address these issues, JAL considered introducing XR training, which would provide an experience similar to that of a real aircraft. The system developed by the Japan XR Center utilizes the functions of the SenseGlove Nova 2 to solve this problem. The glove is equipped with a force feedback function that conveys the size and hardness of objects. It also features vibration feedback to convey impacts and active contact feedback to reproduce the feel of touch.
During training, various feedback functions are used to realistically reproduce the weight of the door handle and the resistance felt when operating it. By feeling the sensation with your fingertips, learning becomes a “muscle memory.” Compared to conventional methods using VR controllers or hand tracking alone, this provides a feeling closer to the actual operation.
The system consists of only Meta Quest 3 and a glove, and does not require large facilities or actual aircraft. Its distinctive feature is that training can be conducted anywhere. It is intended for airline staff working at airports, particularly ground handling staff who perform ground support operations. Repeated practice in a virtual space is expected to improve safety and proficiency.
In addition to developing training for industry, the Japan XR Center is also focusing on the social implementation of XR. The center also operates facilities, and following its first location in Nakano Broadway in Tokyo, opened its second location in Canal City Hakata, Fukuoka in December 2025. The center plans to continue promoting the use of XR beyond the boundaries of industry and entertainment.
