A 3D archive of Kyoto University’s student dormitory, “Yoshida Dormitory,” has been released on Matterport, implemented by the Asahi Shimbun.

The Asahi Shimbun has released a 3D archive of the current building of Yoshida Dormitory at Kyoto University on Matterport. The video can be viewed from the Matterport viewing page. It can also be viewed with a VR headset.

Yoshida Dormitory is a student dormitory that still exists at Kyoto University. The current building was completed in 1913 (Taisho 2) and has largely retained its original appearance. It was the first student dormitory in a Japanese government-run school to introduce a system of one room per student, and as an architectural work built at a turning point in educational thought, it has historical value.

Due to seismic reinforcement work on the current building scheduled to take place within the next five years, students and related personnel are scheduled to temporarily vacate the building at the end of March 2026. Therefore, this 3D archive will be a valuable resource that allows people to virtually see the current state of the building.

Matterport is a service that recreates real-world buildings and spaces as 3D digital models. It offers a “3D walkthrough” feature that allows users to virtually tour spaces by taking photos with a dedicated camera or smartphone. It is used for a wide range of purposes, including real estate viewings and construction documentation, and is available in 177 countries.
