VTuber in Japan 2026.05.18

This video is amazing! This week’s recommended VTuber videos (until May 15th)

High-quality videos from VTubers (Virtual YouTubers) and virtual creators are uploaded every day. From among them, I’ll introduce some videos that I personally think you should definitely watch. In particular, I’ll delve deeper into unique works, works with high technical skill and planning ability, and works that are timely, capturing the fun, effort, and talent of the creators!

Making a “steelpan,” a tropical instrument, using image search, intuition, and sheer determination!!!

Hairpin Mamire, known for his brute-force crafting methods of creating rare instruments based solely on image searches and intuition, is back! This time, he’s making the steelpan, an instrument from Trinidad and Tobago. While it’s famous for its tropical sound, is it even possible to recreate its shape and create a musical scale…?

This time, it turned out to be one of the most challenging and grueling projects in our series of making musical instruments by feel. We started by tapping the bottom of a drum can with a hammer to make a round indentation, and then we just kept banging and banging on the part that makes the sound. Watching us continue banging for days on end, with blisters and calluses on our hands, was enough to make you dizzy.
That’s why the feeling of accomplishment when you finally get the notes right is so immense. At first, I almost gave up on the hairpin-covered thing because it wouldn’t produce any sound, but after searching for instructions online and trying again, I finally succeeded in playing a musical scale.
The key to the Hairpin Mamire series, which involves making instruments by intuition and using hairpins, lies in the ingenuity and resourcefulness used during the creation process. This time, too, the project involves building a straight-line drawing device for a recessed drum can, and other small ideas that are piled up during the construction. This video is packed with the power of Hairpin Mamire, the VTuber, who “thinks,” “puts things into practice,” and “perseveres with sheer determination.”

[Includes real voice] Try creating your own favorite voice and using a voice changer! [Irodori-TTS, Beatrice]

YuuPro has uploaded a video demonstrating how to create voice changers using AI generation. He shows that it’s possible to create something of this quality from absolutely nothing.

The first video introduces “Irodori TTS,” a voice AI that allows you to design your own voice. It demonstrates that you can create high-quality voices for free simply by writing a description of the voice you want, without having to train it with voice actors’ voices or anything like that. You can then hear a commentary created by the voice AI using this method.
Using the voice samples created with “Irodori TTS,” the second video attempts to create a real-time voice changer using an AI tool called “Beatrice.” The system works by allowing users to create their own preferred voice samples with “Irodori TTS,” and then training “Beatrice” with those samples to create a voice changer with the ideal voice.
They also conducted experiments to test things like how much lag there is. Judging from the quality used in the videos, it’s safe to say that it’s at a practical level for everyday use, so if you’re interested, it might be fun to watch these two videos and try it out yourself.

I went to NHKVR’s “Samurai’s Dream : The Ghosts of OSaka Castle” ! [Motokoma Rekijo ]

Motokoma Rekijo(a history enthusiast), has uploaded a video report of her visit to NHK VR “Samurai’s Dream: The Ghosts of Osaka Castle,” currently being held at Shibuya BEAM. Her insightful observations, which focus on the “black cloak” used in battles, are full of sharp observations that only someone knowledgeable about history could provide.

The content of the review would spoil the exhibition, so if you’re interested, please watch the video to find out for yourself. You can hear in considerable detail about what kind of experience you can have with VR.
What’s interesting is that Motokoma Rekijo, is a fan of the Tokugawa side, so she views the event from the Tokugawa perspective. The exhibition itself is about Osaka Castle from the Toyotomi side, so it seems to be centered on the Toyotomi, but you can hear her impressions as if it were another Toyotomi Osaka Castle exhibition seen from a different angle. Her passionate discussion of a certain place that she wanted to see precisely because she’s a Tokugawa fan is also intriguing.
“Samurai’s Dream: The Ghosts of Osaka Castle” is running until May 31st. If you want to have some background information beforehand, especially if you’re a fan of the Tokugawa, we recommend checking out this video before you go.

Minami Tonobori jumps into a live stream without knowing anything and gets terrified #VTuberClip

Tonobori Minami is a VTuber with an unusual style, where the “person inside” is recruited through Timee, and the actor changes daily. Last time, an incredibly high-energy person who knew nothing about VTubers was just chatting, but this time, the complete opposite—an incredibly downbeat person—is playing the role of Minami Tonobori. However, her mumbling talk about her hobbies is surprisingly well-received. This, in a way, is a talent.
…A video like this was uploaded to the (Virtual) Clip Channel. All the videos on this channel are fiction. Of course, this is not a true story either.

There shouldn’t be any VTubers whose “person behind the avatar” changes every day. But what would it look like if there were? This channel explores that “what if” scenario in a “clip video” format, presenting it as a fake documentary.
This “downer” Minami Tonobori might be best appreciated when viewed alongside the “upper” Minami Tonobori from the previous work. While the avatar is the same, the person inside is a completely different individual, working a part-time job at Timee. If you ask how she’s changed, she’s indeed so different that it wouldn’t be wrong to say she’s a completely different being, but both the upper and downer versions are depicted as having talent as a VTuber. This comparison clearly shows how the essential charm of a human actor can easily shine through in a VTuber because they are wearing a virtual avatar.
This two-part fictional work presents improbable situations that prompt reflection, raising questions such as why VTubers wear virtual avatars and what it is about VTubers that attracts people.

Documentary of NIJISANJI 7th Anniversary

Nijisanji celebrated its 7th anniversary in February 2025, and this year marks its 8th anniversary. A documentary video summarizing the past year’s activities has been uploaded by Nijisanji’s official channel. The narration is by Rin Shizuka.

This documentary features a massive amount of footage from events, live performances, and online projects held during Nijisanji’s 7th anniversary, including “Fes Nijisanji 2025,” “Orchestra Nornis Live ‘Concerto di luce’,” “Mito Tsukino 2nd Solo Live ‘Rabbit Paper’,” “Kaede Higuchi 2024-2025 Live Tour ‘BREAKING’,” and “Nijisanji WORLD TOUR 2025 ‘Singin’ in the Rainbow!’.”
The inclusion of behind-the-scenes footage, such as rehearsals, which are usually not seen by the public, is extremely valuable. Numerous commentaries by the participating streamers, sharing their thoughts on the stage and event, convey the diverse emotions they experienced.
One of the highlights not to be missed is the opportunity to see a significant portion of the “Suite Nijisanji,” a medley of Nijisanji-related songs that was performed at the “Nijisanji WORLD TOUR 2025 ‘Singin’ in the Rainbow!’ Tokyo performance.” You can catch a glimpse of a part of their 7-year journey.
The video also included an interview with Tazumi Riku, CEO of ANYCOLOR. He discusses his vision for how to nurture content, not only for Nijisanji but also for the “VTuber” culture as a whole, with the goal of making it a culture that will last for decades or even longer.
In her commentary, Tsukino Mito says about virtual YouTubers, “The future looks incredibly bright, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they evolve.” This video is a spectacular and inspiring one, showcasing the technological advancements, broader range of expression, and expanding fan base that support her sentiment.

[True Story] What Happened When an Independent VTuber Dreamed of Having an Article Published Online…!

VTuber fortune teller Pancake Whipped Cream had an idea. When you go viral on social media or gain attention on YouTube, you sometimes get featured in online articles. Conversely, if you get featured in online articles, won’t you gain attention? So, the method she came up with was…

Ultimately, it seems they had to give up for a certain reason.
The way she takes this solid idea, turns it into a cohesive project, and brings it all together with incredibly fast-paced commentary and editing, really showcases her talent as a video-making VTuber. The short video has a clear beginning, middle, and end, and you can easily watch it all the way through like a bite of cake, which shows how experienced she is at making videos. This video is a great example of the excellent video-making skills of the VTuber Pancake Whipped Cream.

He has also uploaded a video summarizing his video production methods. It introduces the specific software he uses, recording techniques, and font selection methods, making it very useful for anyone who wants to start a VTuber career with videos.

The CoroCoro Group is aiming to be a hit with kids with all their might

Can they gain even more popularity among children!? Toya Kenmochi and Chaika Hanabatake, who appear as main characters in “Nijisanji” from “CoroCoro Comic,” and Debidebi Debiru, who appears in “Debidebi Debiru’s Invasion!”, held a strategy meeting via live stream to discuss how to approach the kids’ demographic.

The three of them conducted a very logical analysis. For example, when considering how to “be liked by children,” they discussed whether it would be necessary to repeat familiar jokes that everyone can enjoy, and what kind of catchy phrases each of them should have to achieve that.
The meeting also included an analysis of current marketing among children, citing specific hit titles and merchandise names such as “Roblox” and “Chiikawa.” They also discussed recent trends in magazines like “CoroCoro Comic” and “Ciao,” and then seriously considered what they themselves could do based on that analysis.
This is a broadcast offering insightful analysis from a sales perspective, which adults will find useful. The content is quite serious, so we can look forward to seeing what kind of children’s content these three will create in the future.

【Amateur Detective】I’ve gathered people in the hall even though I don’t know who the culprit is 😭 I have to somehow bluff my way through an hour 😭【Buying Time】

A detective who thought he had solved the mystery. However, due to a misunderstanding, he has gathered people in the hall without knowing who the culprit is… Rurino Nemo has put together a project in a live stream where she struggles to bluff her way through an hour. No matter what she says, she’s likely to slip up, and everyone is sure to call her out, so what should she do…? An hour of constant suspense begins.

The way the comments appear as speech bubbles and flood the live stream screen is truly innovative, resembling the hustle and bustle of a crowd gathered in a large hall. It’s as if it’s urging the cornered detective to hurry up.
One of the highlights of this stream is seeing how well Rurino Nemo’s viewers grasped the nuances of the broadcast and skillfully played the role of background characters. They were bombarded with comments designed to make Detective Rurino Nemo flustered, and Rurino Nemo’s responses, which deflected each one, were equally impressive. The role-playing between Rurino Nemo and the viewers in the comments section continued for a full hour.
This works because they trust each other that “whatever they say, the other will understand the gist of it and respond accordingly.” Rurino Nemo shows signs of being flustered and easily picked on, while the comment section makes comments that leave her bewildered, but with just the right amount of precision. The situation should be tense, but they are perfectly in sync, making it a pleasant stream to watch.

【#IchijoRirikaBirthday2026】The thrilling holo death game begins!【IchijoRirika/hololive DEV_IS ReGLOSS】

Ten Hololive members are gathered in a mysterious location. To escape, they must participate in a death game. Who will survive and win the game…? This was the premise of Ichijo Ririka‘s birthday celebration. Who exactly was the organizer!?

While there’s a sense of tension because one mistake means instant disqualification, the chaotic and playful atmosphere is typical of Hololive, making it a death game that’s easy to watch. The first game, a tongue twister, is relatively easy, but from there on, it’s a series of elaborate games. Creative games like “blindfolded meat tasting” and “Russian hot dogs” are played one after another, and you can see the Hololive members’ reactions. As a birthday project stream, it’s quite elaborate, and it’s an hour of fun with a variety show-like vibe. Who is the real organizer…!?

To coincide with the death game event, Ichijo Ririka’s original song “Gachi Maji☆Death Game,” which is linked to the event, has also been released. The music video uses footage from the game, so it’s recommended to watch it after watching the main birthday celebration video. The song depicts the tense atmosphere of the death game, but Ichijo Ririka sings it in her usual comical style, making it a fun song that you can listen to while laughing.

Let’s talk about essay comics! ~The history and evolution of manga that depict “me”~ [Kyoto International Manga Museum] #Ayane #ChidoriAdachi

Science comic writer Ayane conducted a live stream discussing the history and evolution of essay manga that depict “me.” Chidori Adachi served as the interviewer. Based on the “Essay Manga Prescriptions to Save Me” exhibition currently being held at the Kyoto International Manga Museum, the stream clearly explains what essay manga is and how it has changed over time.

Starting with the definition of essay manga, the presentation explains the origins of essay manga, the emergence of the genre in the 1960s, the rise of essay manga from the 1970s onward, the establishment and diversification of the genre, the formalization of comic essays as a genre in the 2000s, and the development of social media, all explained step-by-step using flip charts.
The content is very easy to listen to, as it discusses the characteristics of each era in detail. For example, it focuses on points that will capture the listener’s interest, such as how the bonus illustrations and quarter-space illustrations in 1970s books have greatly influenced today’s essay manga.
In the final section, Ayane, who actually works as a science comic writer, shares her real-life experiences with serializing a manga. It’s an interesting broadcast from the perspective of someone who actually draws the comics.

【Original Song】52Hz, or【Sukoya Kana/Nijisanji】

Sukoya Kana uploaded a new original music video, “52Hz, or,” on her birthday. The lyrics were written by Sukoya Kana herself, the music was composed by Genzuki Tojiro, and the mixing and mastering were done by un:c.

https://x.com/sukosuko_sukoya/status/2054554216270860520

In a post on X, she described this song as “a song I wrote to save myself.”
The music video depicts both the struggles of Kana Sukoya during her student days and her life as a VTuber. As a VTuber, Sukoya Kana continues to push forward with even more relentless energy, and at first glance, she seems to be shining brightly and everything about her looks fun. However, she comes back to her senses, thinking, “Why am I doing this? All I wanted was to see your happy face,” and from there she confronts the pain she carries within herself.
The “52Hz” in the title likely refers to a single whale. It is said that because its vocalizations are at a frequency too high for other whales to hear, it is unable to communicate with its companions and continues to cry out in solitude.
Perhaps Sukoya Kana herself had been carrying a loneliness that she had never been able to share with anyone until now. But by expressing it through song this time, her feelings and her voice reached many people.
This song is sung with care, cherishing every single word. Please listen to her voice, which seems to pour out from her entire being.

[MV] Ghost story/Kei Nagao

This 5-minute piece provides the same satisfaction as having listened to a high-quality rakugo (traditional Japanese storytelling) performance. Nagao Kei‘s new original song, “Kaidan” (Ghost Story), starts in the form of a ghost story with a demon motif being told in a rakugo theater. It then transforms into a song, allowing the listener to fully appreciate the story. The original concept is by Nagao Kei, and the lyrics and music are by Kanon69.

Nagao Kei’s rakugo performance is a must-listen. His acting and storytelling skills are so impressive that the scenes come alive in your mind just by listening. Then, in the vocal part, he sounds as if he’s possessed by a demon. The changes in his emotions, including the demon’s pleasure, are expressed with fierce intensity.
This rakugo-style song is captivating to listen to, and it even has a brilliant punchline at the end, making you want to applaud after it finishes. It’s an original song that showcases the talent of performer and vocalist Nagao Kei.
Also, in the comments section, you can find a story introduction and lyrics written by Kanon69 herself, so please be sure to check that out after listening to the song. The story will become much clearer, and when you listen to it again, you will feel the power of what Nagao Kei says in the song even more deeply.

【Original Song】Tokino Sora “Ketsui no Sora e”【Official Music Video】

Her dream is transforming into a determined goal. Tokino Sora has uploaded the music video for her new original song, “To the Sky of Determination.”
This upbeat pop song is full of the positive attitude of Tokino Sora, who has been diligently moving forward as a virtual YouTuber idol, and it serves as a great source of encouragement for herself.

The song starts off by singing about dreams, “Let’s keep chasing our endless dreams forever and ever and ever,” but as the chorus begins, it shifts from just a dream to a goal to be achieved, with lines like, “I don’t want my dreams to end as just dreams, let’s go see the scenery we’ve never seen before.”
For example, the Pia Arena MM venue that appears midway through the video is the venue for Tokino Sora’s solo live concert on November 7, 2026. Later in the video, Arena Yokohama, where she has said it has been her dream to perform since the beginning of her career, is also shown. It’s as if her next resolve, after fulfilling her dreams one by one and moving forward, is etched into her singing voice and the video. The fact that she sings about “you,” the person who has supported her on her journey, will surely touch the hearts of listeners who have been listening to her music.
Her singing, which excels in high notes, possesses the same clear, sky-blue transparency as ever. The way she lets her voice resonate as if soaring high into the sky is a highlight.

【MV】Protoface | Shakado Melt 【#OriginalSong #NewVTuber】

The music video for Shakado Melt‘s 1st original song, “Protoface,” has been released! The song features a fast-paced melody that feels like it’s racing, and the powerful vocals are sure to grab your attention!

The animation, rendered using binary lines, is full of dynamism and conveys a straightforward strength due to its stripped-down simplicity.
As she sings, “I’ll hold onto this heart that’s about to become completely exhausted,” it seems that her life hasn’t always been smooth sailing, and she has continued to battle hardships. However, her songs, which include lines like “I don’t need a finished product, mass-produced items won’t do, a melody of a color unlike any other,” are always positive and overflowing with power that seems to be defeated by anything. Her rock-and-roll singing voice, which keeps moving forward, is the very essence of a virtual guru, inspiring the hearts of those who listen. Her singing style, which embraces her true self while reaching out to us, is full of passionate energy that seems to save the hearts of her fans as well.
